How to Humanize AI Content: Make Claude Write Like a Real Person

AI-written content gets ignored for one reason: it sounds like AI. Readers feel it in seconds, even when they cannot name what is off. The good news is that the "AI sound" is not magic and it is not random. It comes from a short list of predictable habits, and every one of them can be removed.

This article shows you what those habits are, how to get Claude (or any AI) to write past them, and how to make the fix automatic with a reusable skill instead of repeating the same instructions every day.

Why AI writing sounds robotic

Models are trained to be safe, balanced, and structured. Helpful for accuracy, terrible for voice. The result is a set of tells that show up in almost every raw AI draft:

  • Uniform rhythm. Every sentence lands at roughly the same length. Human writing speeds up and slows down.
  • Stock phrases. "In today's fast-paced world", "delve into", "unlock the power of", "game-changer". Nobody talks like this.
  • Hedging on everything. "This can potentially help to improve..." A person with an opinion just says what the thing does.
  • Empty intros and conclusions. A paragraph that announces the topic, and a closing that restates the intro. Both say nothing.
  • Over-structure. Bullets and headers everywhere, even where a flowing paragraph would carry the point better.
  • Zero specificity. Abstract claims ("improves efficiency") with no concrete detail a real person would actually notice.

Readers do not reject AI content because a detector flagged it. They reject it because it sounds like nobody.

The fix is instructions, not luck

Most people try to fix this by regenerating: "make it sound more human." That helps a little, once. The real fix is telling the AI exactly what to change, because the tells above are specific and correctable:

  1. Give it a voice. Not "professional tone". Tell it who is speaking: "a founder writing to other business owners, direct, confident, no fluff."
  2. Feed it samples. Two or three paragraphs of your real writing beat any adjective. The AI matches rhythm and word choice from examples far better than from descriptions.
  3. Name the bans. List the stock phrases and hedges you never want. An explicit ban list works; "avoid cliches" does not.
  4. Demand specificity. Ask for one concrete detail per section. Specificity is the single strongest human signal in writing.
  5. Ask it to read aloud. Literally instruct: "any sentence you would not say to a colleague, rewrite it." It is a surprisingly effective filter.

Do this in a fresh chat and you get a good draft. But here is the problem: tomorrow you have to type all of it again.
